What is Trauma?

Trauma can stem from any adverse life event that appears overwhelming and hard to move past. This could be physical trauma, such as abuse or a car accident. Or emotional trauma caused by toxic relationships or the sudden end of a relationship. Both physical and emotional traumas can lead to a sensation of being trapped in the past, inflicting a psychological wound that the human brain often cannot process.

Signs and Symptoms of Trauma

Every individual responds to traumatic experiences in unique ways, but several common symptoms are associated with trauma. These symptoms can significantly disrupt daily life, but individuals can begin their journey toward healing with the proper support and therapeutic intervention. Common symptoms of trauma include:

  • Intrusive memories that persistently resurface
  • Avoidance behavior, where the individual actively avoids anything that reminds them of the trauma
  • Negative changes in thinking and mood, such as an overall pessimistic outlook or inability to experience positive emotions
  • Changes in physical and emotional reactions, like being easily startled or feeling constantly on edge
  • Low self-esteem
  • Difficulties in relationships
  • Jumpiness
  • Trouble making decisions or problem-solving
  • Poor concentration (not to be confused with ADHD) or loss of memory
  • Physical symptoms such as nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, tremors, sweating, chills, dizziness, and chronic pain

What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, often abbreviated as PTSD, is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of a life-threatening or deeply distressing event. It is marked by a persistent internal struggle with emotionally-charged memories and thoughts connected to the traumatic event, which extend far beyond the duration of the event itself. Those affected by PTSD often grapple with a cycle of distress and mental discomfort, even without immediate danger or threat.

Sings and Symptoms of PTSD

Individuals with PTSD often continue to relive the emotional and physical experience of trauma long after the event has passed and display many telltale symptoms. Recognizing these symptoms is the first step toward seeking help. With proper therapy and a supportive environment, individuals with PTSD can find relief and regain control of their lives. Specific PTSD symptoms include:

  • Intrusive thoughts or flashbacks of the traumatic event
  • Hyper-vigilance, where the individual is constantly on high alert
  • Increased heart rate or chest pain
  • Insomnia, resulting from nightmares or fear of nightmares
  • Emotional disturbances such as anxiety, excessive worry, fear, guilt, grief, depression, and irritability
  • Isolation, loneliness, anger
  • Disassociation, feeling numb
  • Engaging in numbing behaviors such as substance use

Our Method of Treatment For Trauma & PTSD

At Anchor Light Therapy, our expert therapists offer a variety of therapeutic interventions designed to support individuals who have experienced trauma or PTSD. These treatment options form part of a trauma-focused treatment plan, developed collaboratively between the client and the therapist, and tailored to the individual’s unique goals and needs.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy offers a safe space to work through your traumatic experiences at your own pace. By working one-on-one with a trauma-informed therapist, you can begin to understand and process your trauma, ultimately learning to manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life.

Couples Therapy

For those in a relationship, trauma can create additional layers of complexity. Couples therapy provides a supportive environment for partners to understand each other’s experiences and work together towards a healthier relationship dynamic, helping to foster communication, trust, and mutual support.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful therapeutic technique particularly effective for trauma and PTSD. It works by helping the brain process traumatic memories, reduce their emotional intensity, and help clients view these experiences from a new, healthier perspective.

CPT Mindfulness Therapy

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) combined with mindfulness practices helps clients understand and reshape thought patterns that lead to symptoms, encouraging a greater sense of present-moment awareness and reducing the impact of past traumatic experiences.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is an effective tool that taps into the subconscious mind to help clients safely explore their trauma, reframe their experiences, and build positive coping mechanisms.
