What can you expect when you engage in Child therapy?
Intake, Assessment, Treatment Planning and Engagement
Your therapist will complete a thorough assessment with you, and your child, to understand their history and current challenges or symptoms. This will help inform the direction of treatment and a diagnosis, if applicable. Together you will create a treatment plan which will establish the goals for therapy.
Engaging children in therapy involves a careful consideration of developmental level, and social and emotional needs. Brain development occurs through childhood and into young adulthood, and children 12 and under are still growing their abilities for processing language and expressing themselves verbally.
We require that a parent/guardian attend the child’s intake session with them
Phase Two
Therapy
To best support children and their developmental needs in therapy, sessions are based in play and experiential activities. This approach maximizes therapeutic benefit by engaging children in ways that feel natural, comfortable, and safe to their developing minds. In child therapy, parents and caregivers are involved as consultants to their child’s work. Session times are typically reserved for one-on-one interactions between your child and their therapist, with parent and caregiver consultations scheduled at regular intervals.
These consultations provide space for therapists, parents, and/or caregivers to collaborate during the treatment process, share feedback and observations, and adjust treatment approaches or therapy goals as needed. Your therapist will work closely with you to determine an approach to treatment and consultation which best supports the therapeutic needs of your child.
Phase Three
Review
You and your therapist will review progress made in therapy and determine if continued support is needed, or if you are ready to end services.
FAQs
Does my child need to have their own TherapyPortal account?
Yes. All information (scheduling, clinical notes, etc..) will be kept on your child’s chart. Therefore, we will create a profile specific to your child. On this profile, the parents/guardians will enter their email and phone number for scheduling and/or billing reasons.
What about check-in calls/sessions with the parent/guardian?
These types of events are coded as ‘90846-Family Therapy without ID’d Client Present’. The child’s profile will be used for these events, even though the child is not present.
Child Therapy
Our child therapy services include weekly sessions, and our model of care includes parental involvement. Our primary client is the child, but we can also provide parental support and coaching. Your child’s clinician will determine the frequency of parental involvement in therapy and will work collaboratively. The primary modalities used in our child services are Play and Art Therapy. We do not provide intensive therapy services, such as multiple sessions a week, group therapy and crisis services.
Therefore, if you or your child is experiencing suicidality, self-harm, violent behaviors or behaviors of an eating disorder, referral to more intensive treatment is recommended. There will be more assessment of these areas during the initial consultation. We also do not do coordination of, or expert testimony related to custody issues. We are happy to provide resources or referrals, if needed.
How much does it cost?
