What is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, manifesting through various symptoms in multiple settings, such as at school, work, or home. Typical ADHD symptoms include difficulty commanding executive functioning skills and sustaining attention in tasks, forgetfulness, fidgeting, and impulsive decision-making. Additionally, ADHD is a common co-occurring condition in those who experience anxiety and depression.
ADHD is typically diagnosed in childhood, although its presentation and symptoms can continue and even change as the child enters matures and experiences awareness of ADHD in adulthood. The three primary ADHD presentations include:
- Combined Presentation is the most common presentation of ADHD. Individuals with this presentation exhibit symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity.
- Predominantly Inattentive Presentation was formerly known as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). Individuals with this presentation predominantly exhibit symptoms of inattention without the characteristic symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity.
- Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation is less common than inattentive predominance. Individuals with this presentation display symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity without the dominant inattentive symptoms found in the inattentive presentation.
What is the Difference Between ADD and ADHD?
You’ve probably heard the terms “ADD” (Attention Deficit Disorder) and “ADHD” (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) used interchangeably and wondered about the difference between the two. Historically, “ADD” was the term used in older diagnostic manuals, but since 1994, “ADHD” has become the official term, encompassing the three presentations above. While “ADD” is still a cultural term and traditionally points to cases with primary inattention without hyperactivity, “ADHD” is the official and most up-to-date term used in a clinical or formal setting.
