Emotionally Focused Therapy vs. Gottman Method Couples Therapy

One of the most important factors in your success in couples therapy is the therapist you work with. Both partners need to trust the therapist and feel comfortable with them, of course, but the type of couples therapy they practice is just as important. These “types” are what’s known as treatment modalities, and they are the tools, framework, and methods your therapist uses to help you and your partner gain a better understanding of each other.

While many kinds of treatment modalities focus exclusively on couples, two of the more common and popular methods are emotionally focused therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Method. In some respects, EFT and Gottman therapy are similar. They both help couples build a strong bond and deepen the emotional intimacy they share. However, Gottman Method and EFT help couples reach these goals differently.

One method may be more comfortable for you or your partner, and one may be more appropriate for your relationship goals. So how do you choose between Gottman vs EFT for your couples therapy?

What Is Emotionally Focused Therapy?

Emotionally focused therapy is a structured approach to couples therapy. It’s based on attachment theory and the belief that partners need a safe and secure attachment to each other to build a strong, healthy relationship.

The core of attachment theory is that the early bond you create with your primary caregiver (usually your parents) impacts your emotional development and ability to trust others. These early attachments influence how you develop relationships throughout your life.

Children who grow up with insecure attachments often have trouble creating secure attachments as adults in romantic relationships. They often find themselves in conflict with their partner and feeling betrayed, which creates distance between the couple. Unable to resolve the conflict, couples find themselves in a never-ending and reinforcing cycle of negative behaviors and patterns that create more conflict and distance.

Emotionally focused therapy helps couples identify the negative patterns and how to break this cycle. At the same time, EFT encourages each partner to examine and heal their attachment issues, allowing them to create the emotional trust necessary to create a healthy, lasting bond with each other.

What Is the Gottman Method?

Developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the Gottman Method is based on over 40 years of relationship research. It helps couples strengthen their relationship with a foundation of trust, connection, and shared meaning.

The core of the Gottman Method is the Sound Relationship House, the things that keep a relationship stable and fulfilling. Couples learn how to build a strong relationship that starts with a foundation of deep friendship, mutual respect, and emotional connection. Using this foundation, couples are better able to manage and de-escalate conflict in a healthy, constructive manner.

Over the course of therapy, couples learn how to replace negative patterns with positive interactions, learning how to come together as a team and support each other’s goals to create a shared sense of meaning and purpose.

How Are EFT and Gottman Method Therapies Similar?

In some respects, EFT and Gottman Method couples therapy are similar. Both are evidence-based modalities with decades of research and study that demonstrate their effectiveness.

Both modalities also give couples practical tools and strategies for recognizing and stopping the repetitive and destructive behaviors and patterns that negatively impact their relationship. At the same time, EFT and the Gottman Method prioritize creating a safe and nonjudgmental environment where examining these patterns helps each partner better understand each other.

Other similarities between EFT and the Gottman Method are that both modalities focus on relationship intimacy. No matter where a couple is in their therapy journey, EFT and Gottman Method work on creating friendship, trust, and a deep emotional connection between partners, allowing them to build a strong relationship foundation.

Finally, EFT and Gottman Method also emphasize validating each partner’s feelings. Instead of dismissing a partner’s reaction or emotions or blaming them for the situation, the modalities help each partner recognize and embrace the reality of how their partner is feeling and work to give each of them the tools for acknowledging and working within that context.

What Is the Difference Between Gottman and EFT?

While EFT and Gottman Method couples therapy are both evidence-based approaches that help couples heal and strengthen their relationship, how they help couples achieve that goal is different.

The Gottman Method uses structured, practical techniques to help couples manage conflict and create long-term relationship stability. It emphasizes certain relationship tools, including honest communication and conflict management, to help prevent common relationship breakdowns, like criticism and defensiveness. Ultimately, the Gottman Method helps couples build better relationship habits and conflict management skills to develop a deep and respectful friendship that forms the core of your relationship.

Emotionally focused therapy centers on the emotional bond between partners. During a therapy session, partners work on understanding their deeper emotional needs and address things like anger or betrayal that make it difficult to form a secure, loving, and healthy attachment. During EFT, couples learn how to heal their attachment and form a trusting bond so partners feel safe and secure with each other and within the relationship.

Gottman Method vs EFT for Couples Counseling?

Both Gottman Method and EFT are excellent therapy modalities for improving your relationship. However, each modality is often better suited for your therapy goals as well as how you operate as a couple.

The Gottman Method is best suited for couples who want to improve their day-to-day communications and conflict management skills. It pairs concrete, practical tools with structured assessments, allowing you to leave each therapy session with homework and exercises to help you deepen your relationship and reduce relationship conflict.

Emotionally focused therapy is ideal for couples who feel emotionally disconnected or suffer from attachment issues. It helps couples identify and heal the root cause of their insecure attachment and heal their emotional bond both during a therapy session and at home.

Couples Therapy Across Modalities

Humans are complex and often don’t fit neatly into a single category. Couples are no different, and each partner brings their whole and multifaceted self to counseling. While you may be more comfortable in one modality versus the other, both offer tools, tips, and techniques that can support your relationship, and some couples find that blending Gottman Method with EFT is the better choice for them.

No matter what therapy modality you’re considering or where you are in your relationship, the compassionate team of therapists at Anchor Light Therapy can support you and your partner. Our Gottman Method and EFT therapists will work with both of you to help you heal and strengthen your relationship for now and into the future.
