Why Group Therapy?
Whether you’re seeking support for anxiety, relationship issues, personal development, or another area of mental health, group therapy can be a powerful tool on your path to healing and resilience.
Group therapy gathers people facing similar challenges, like dealing with grief or anxiety, and provides a caring, supportive, and safe environment for them to process their situation. Individual members listen to other members discuss their experiences and gain new insights and understanding on how to cope.
While group therapy sessions can complement individual therapy sessions, some people improve their mental health using only group therapy.
Is Group Therapy the Same as a Support Group?
While group therapy is a safe space to process your experiences and start healing, it’s not the same as a support group.
Support groups also provide group members a safe space to process experiences. However, support groups are usually more informal. While they may take place in a behavioral health setting (like the meeting room of a clinic), support groups aren’t usually led or facilitated by a licensed therapist.
Benefits of Group Therapy
Group therapy offers benefits that go beyond individual therapy and counseling. By engaging with other group members, clients can:
- Build Community and Connection: Group therapy helps combat feelings of isolation by connecting you with others who understand your struggles. Creating meaningful connections with others can make challenges feel more manageable and remind you that you’re not alone.
- Gain New Perspectives: Hearing from other members can shed light on your situation, offering fresh perspectives and insights. Group members often share strategies that have helped them, which can introduce you to new coping skills or tools for growth.
- Practice Communication and Relational Skills: Group settings provide a safe place to practice skills like setting boundaries, expressing emotions, and active listening. These skills are essential for personal growth and building stronger relationships outside the therapy room.
- Accelerate Personal Growth: The shared accountability of group therapy can motivate you to make progress more quickly. By observing and supporting others, you often find inspiration for your journey.
